William Dalrymple has written a thoughtful review of the recent publication of letters by Bruce Chatwin. Apparently he once wrote the foreword for Robert Byron’s Road to Oxania – in the newest edition Rory Stewart is doing that job. Considering their eccentricity and British background that’s a fair choice and good reason to finally order this book. A writer who in his writing is definitely closer to Chatwin than Stewart was Nicolas Bouvier, whose Way of the World I can recommend.

While ordering Byron’s book, I remebered to get Alexander Burnes’ Travels to Bokhara which Amazon, nor Abebooks stocks – it’s available online though.

So much for Chatwin-like namedropping …
