Burj al Bait – almost the size of imperialist Saudi ego
This year Saudi Arabia’s government completed their version of Big Ben, Abraj Al Bait (Mecca Royal Hotel Clock Tower) in the Muslim holy city of Mecca. This second tallest building in the world (after Burj Khalifa), has only significance of this building is it is standing over Masjid al Haram or Kaaba. I am astonished that it’s built with US$ 15 billion just to boost Saudi King’s imperialist ego the size of Mount Everest. Perhaps taller. Because if they were trying to portray Islam’s greatness by inscribing ‘God is the Greatest’ above the clock, it’s not at all Islamic. Islam (and I guess every other religion) condemned such useless lavish spending on things of no practical value. If the Saudi King was trying to serve Islam, this US$ 15 billion could provide food for millions of starving Africans. This would have been better service to Islam, and humanity. Not a Golden tower replicating a historic clock tower of London.
